主讲人简介

Prof. Eiichi Nakamura earned his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Tokyo Institute of Technology. After postdoctoral research at Columbia University, he returned to his alma mater as an Assistant Professor in 1980 and was subsequently promoted to Full Professor before moving to the University of Tokyo in 1995. He served as University Professor and held the Molecular Technology Innovation Endowed Chair at the University of Tokyo until March 2026. Since April 2026, he has been Chair Professor in the College of Chemistry at Nankai University. His research spans synthetic and physical chemistry, with a particular interest in understanding the structures, dynamics, and functions of organic and inorganic substances. In 2007, he pioneered the use of time-resolved transmission electron microscopy to study chemical structures and reactions from a statistical-mechanical perspective. His work has been recognized by numerous honors, including election as a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2008), the Chemical Society of Japan Award (2009), the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award of the American Chemical Society (2010), the Fujiwara Award (2014), the Royal Society of Chemistry Centenary Prize (2014), and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society (2025). He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2009 and the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, from His Majesty the Emperor of Japan in 2024.

讲座简介

Thermodynamics transformed chemistry into a quantitative experimental science through measurable macroscopic quantities. Statistical mechanics, although providing its molecular foundation, has remained largely theoretical because molecular microstates have escaped direct observation. Time-resolved electron microscopy is now making statistical mechanics experimentally accessible by directly quantifying molecular motions, reaction pathways, and microstate distributions at atomic resolution. This lecture introduces Statistical-Mechanical Chemistry, an emerging framework that links molecular movies to entropy (1), reaction kinetics (2), catalys (3), and non-equilibrium chemical transformations (4,5).
